Friday the Rep published a Letter to the Editor from Dick Drake, Certified Arborist, reminding us about the history of Arbor Day and the importance of trees to us and our environment. Now we're not acquainted with Mr. Dale, but anybody who plants trees is OK with us. On an Arbor day long past, we planted a tree in a Sealtest milk carton in our backyard. It now stands over 60 feet high. One of these days it will upturn the garage.

Be we digress...

No sooner did the letter appear when Beavis and Butthead...er, we mean Just S tom and ocean appeared on the scene, apparently toked up on skunkweed, to assure us that no good deed will go unpunished.

Reppie bloodletters are at it again.

When we last left dsteelman1, he'd won a IHC-CIA -sponsored trip to the Middleastern country of his choice to whack as many prisoners he could work into his 10-day vacation. Unfortunately, the tickets remain in our Hartville mail drop awaiting pick-up. Now, he's proferring a suggestion that the State of Ohio can clear out its bloated prisons by shooting all of its "violent" prisoners and then move in the "misdemeanor' folks" to fill the vacuum. And, we assume, save dreaded government jobs for the (mostly) lesser class, though he fails to mention that windfall

ANyone who thinks all the prisoners are just misunderstood victims of their upbringing, please start protesting to get ALL of them released.

It would be like Mad max in this state. Maybe then some of you criminal lovers would get a dose of reality.

You want better prisons?? Then make the prisons for the 'misdemeanor ' folks.

Shoot all the violent offenders. You would have plenty of room then. Lower taxes due to less people in prison. I say its a win-win.

But most people today think the criminals have an excuse for thier crimes and will moan and cry if they are really punished( death penalty ) for their crimes.

Someone on here said we have 4 million people in the prison system. How bout we shoot all the violent ones and see how fast people shape up??

I Hate Canton just noticed we forgot to post this the other day. We have slightly edited the original to update it.

As I Hate Canton predicted, the Macy Gray thread went down around 11:00 AM last Friday (see Sept. 24 Village Idiot of the Day Award--Sept. 25 blog below.)

But, as we know, nature abhors a vacuum, and as soon as we could say Ku Klux Klan our Reppie Racists (RR) slimed their way into Housing Units Get a 3-5M Upgrade (thread also shut down). Of course, just for fun "gottheanswer" dragged Mary Parker into the fray. Ms Parker has written a splendid reply to our white robed and brown shirted neighbors which is posted in a separate blog immediately below this, so it won't get lost.

In the meantime, here's a sampling of our best and brightest non-de-pluming racists. (We admit that there are legitimate concerns about tax funds flowing into a virtual money pit, but that has nothing to do with race). Since the thread went down, we are giving a larger sampling than usual. To get the full effect of our RR's social and intellectual dysfunctions and language and grammar deficiencies, we are clumping comments together by name, not chronological order

Just like health reform, these big federal projects turn into disasters, they sound good but take all the incentive away for people to improve. Big cities are razing all the wonderful welfare high rises, that turned into drug and crime holes. Its sad these people have to live like this. bbj is right, respect for yourself is lacking, one person was appalled that 'volunteers' would clean up Canton before the HOF. Thats the type of person that destroys these housing units. Sad

If the shoe fits wear it, but 'They' are the ones that live in the squaller, inside and out, they need to clean up the trash like my grandmother would take us down the street with a trash bag. Billions of dollars and decades after LBJ declared a 'war on poverty', this is where we are. Record numbers of people living at or below the poverty line and record numbers on food stamps, all within the last couple of months. When the government becomes the benefactor for a huge segment of the population, that population becomes dependent and demands 'entitlement'. They now comprise almost 50 percent of the population. This is why we now have trillions in deficits which we can NEVER pay back. And the 'gimme mine' crowd wants nothing from Congress other than to keep getting their 'fair share'. Until the people actually paying federal taxes throw out the scum who enable this mentality in order to get re-elected, it will only get worse. Washington needs an enema in 2010.

Speaking of cHIPS, I rode past there just the other day , and said too myself how HORRIBLE it looked, then i remembered the day back in 1972 my grandparents sold the old farm and moved too Rainbow Acres, due too health, but i remember when them things were brand new ! now 37 years later look at it !!!! I know The area there gonna put 3.5 million into very well, that is one of the most infested areas in the city, there might be a few decent working class people in that neighborhood, but the rest is a war zone. Now when i was growing up it still had some nice old houses and more people who cared ... but thats not no more. dam 3.5 million !!!! what the city could do with that kind of money? mmm mmm mmm......CRAZY !!!! hey heres something CRAZY, how about THE CITY OF CANTON put 3.5 into a Military style police force!!! Thats a new take I have not heard Don. Its putting others down to want to keep my own money and not pay for the entire lives of those not willing to work. But then again it is the way of the left. Forced charity is not charity. Demonize the people who actually work and pay their own way. Enable and encourage those who live off of the fruits of OTHERS labor. There's nothing like a good execution--or a botched one--to get Reppies going. Over the last few days we've read comments in two threads that would warm the hearts of Fernando Alvarez de Toledo aka The Iron Duke of Alva and famous Ottoman executioner Soulfikar regarding:

(1) the attempted state execution of Romell Broom, whom the state's killer-for-hire spent 2 1/2 hours poking with a needle before they both called it a day;

(2) the murder of a Maple Heights mail carrier.

It's not like I Hate Canton doesn't understand abstract revenge. We frequently fantasize about boiling some of our VOID's in a nice goat's head soup. As hard as it is to accept, however, the US is a country of laws. If we personally metted out revenge on whim, the population would be culled to the bare minimum--or less.

I Hate Canton planned to post from Ohio's Heart of Darkness, but between fighting off thugs and developing cultural critique, there was just no time. We have returned from our brief sojourn to the jungle and expect to catch up, or at least pick up where we left off.

I Hate Canton is surprised (if that is the correct word) at the hatred SARTA riders engender in the anti-tax crowd. Having spent 25 years using the old Canton City Lines/RTA, we feel your pain to an extent. Buses back then were full of noisy high school students (including ourself) and wrinkly old babbas dressed in black dresses and witch shoes, pounding their canes and babbling away in Greek, Italian and Yiddish. These undoubtedly illegal alien grannies of an earlier generation should have been thrown into camps for not learning to speak the Queens's English and refusing to shop the Hattie Carnegie line at Stern & Mann's. Instead, these sleeper socialists were allowed to ride the bus on the cheap and formulate SARTA socialism for a future generation of layabouts.

And don't remind us of the bus drivers. I Hate Canton had one RTA driver on the South Market route who whiled away his boredom starring in his mirror and up the dresses of female passengers. (He bragged his hobby to us, though we already suspected it). Around 1974 we had a cute blond early- morning Country Fair-area driver who informed us he liked to drop acid before starting his day's sojourn through the streets of Can-town. We liked to believe that wasn't true, but his driving, while adequate, didn't lie. To this day, when we take a bus, we fortify ourselves with a couple quick hits of Wild Irish Rose before heading out the door, and hope for the best.

Nothing has prepared us, however, for comments posted the last few days after SARTA announced major layoffs and route cutbacks. Not only did Reppies exhibit jumpin' joy over tax leeches (union bus drivers, mechanics) losing their jobs, but took particular enjoyment that SARTA riders might now be forced to live like car-driving, law-abiding, tax-paying citizens, instead of the entitlement tax cheats they are.

Until we read these comments we had no idea that public transportation is welfare. We had no idea that we personally are tax chislers, welfare queens, and entitlement whores. We had no idea that bus riders were spendthrifts and that the old and feeble who need to get someplace were poor money managers, bad social planners, and a drain on taxpaying society. We had no idea that buses aren't a normal mode of travel. Having spent an inordinate amount of time in large American and European cities with buses, and trams, and subways, and trains that the majority of people--even the "rich"--use to get around, we can only guess that none of our Reppies have ever left the confines of Canton, Ohio.

"Unfortunately," some of the worst Reppie comments have been removed, including our favorite, the one that referred to SARTA riders as "shoplifters." That lack, however, will not stop us from dedicating today's Village Idiot Award to those anonymous Reppies who rank public transportation up there with Lenin's First 5-Year Plan. Sorry public-transit fans, but SARTA has been a financial waste of tax dollars since it began. As for checking any national public transportation website for facts--Please be serious. I really get a kick out of these 'cost-savings' they promote. What do they base their cost to drive personal cars on--a brand new Lexus or Escalade??? I have a very dependable S10 pickup that gets 30 mpg i paid $500 for years ago. It costs tax-payers millions so people can ride this wasteful 'service' for $1.50 !!! How about this, raise the fare to $5.00 to help cover these expenses. As I've heard the levy supporters say---thats just the cost of a pack of cigarettes, a Starbucks coffee or a McDonalds lunch. If you cant afford that, you obviously cant afford to go to the mall anyways."

To the poster that said it only costs $1.50 to ride the bus....YOU ARE WRONG. You might only put $1.50 in the fare box, but my tax dollars are putting in the rest it costs to shuttle your rear end around the county. If I could get MY fare money back that I don't even use, I could reduce my auto costs significantly.

For what it's worth, I ride my bike to work. It costs you AND me nothing.

This is Stark County, not Fulton County Georgia (that's Atlanta for the geographically challenged here) where buses and trains are full during rush hours and on weekends. I've never seen a SARTA bus half full let alone completely full. If it were run like a private business it would close, but since it's government, they just keep wasting money so some politicians can say they have a nice public transportation system like the big cities do."If Stark County actually had a real need for this service then it would be self sufficient. The problem is the people that believe in the 'entitlement state'.

Well I didn't read the comments until after I posted mine. It is a shame that you think most riders dont pay taxes and are scum. I am 24 working at wal-mart. Been there for two years. Work my but off and pay my taxes. Trust me it does make me sick the people that do ride and collect government moneys. I see those people to lazy to get a job and now rely on a food card. When I barely make a good wage and pay every dime out of my pocket for my family's food. If all these people would try (key word) to get a job and pay taxes they could have more money without these cuts.

The part where paying for your ride to work takes money out of my kids mouths.

The part where some of MY money could be used to by myself a newer more reliable vehicle to get to work. For the record( 97 Suburban , 170,000 miles, no heat ,only 4th gear.)

The part where todays 'people' insist that there need of my money is so overwhelming as to describe people like me as hatemongers, wingnuts, uncaring , etc, etc.

These are a few of the 'parts' I dont understand.

What part of, we the people are having just as hard a time with paycuts , layoffs , paying bills in this economy as you or anyone else. And to top that off , we hear from people who DEMAND our money for themselves and their own needs, do you not understand

We hope that you agree that dsteelman1, who has previously argued that welfare recipients be "spayed and neutered," their "urchins" starved in the street, and that "large population centers of America aren't any safer than Iraq" deserves first prize of the day. Mr. ds1's neighbors should march on his house, confiscate his smelly SUV and pull it to the nearest junkyard leaving him desperate and carless and eventually jobless. We congratulate Ms. Whelan for not obliging ds by sticking her head in the oven. We trust she will continue her nightly raids into his kitchen to feed her greedy SARTA habit. We wonder, though, if she ought not bring a dentist with her to help extract dsteelman1's money from his children's mouths.

Second place goes to CJ74U2NV. As a bonus, he or she will be dropped off on the outskirts of Limaville for one week and expected to walk to The Strip from there. The walk will be monitored. No bike. No cheating allowed.

Tied for second place, csdunson is also dropped off in Limaville; only he or she will be flogged through a guantlet of red banners swung by the Peoples Congress of the Stark County Communist Party aka, the SARTA Board.

Then there's Braxton, returned from well-deserved obscurity. Braxton hates women on general principle. According to him, his wife left him with three kids to trip the light fantastic solo. If Braxton's comments here are anything like their marriage, we congratulate the former Mrs. B for her prudent career move.

Braxton's latest diatribe started when he innocently posted a defense of bad manners at the McKinley High School graduation, as described by Davida Carter-Burns' letter to the editor. Carter-Burns complained about the loud, obnoxious behavior of adults--presumably parents and relatives of graduating seniors-- during the ceremony: seat crawling, walking on the main floor, cellphone chit-chatting, shouting, and other uncouth activities, aided and abetted by a lousy sound system. Pleas from the announcer to shut up and sit down went unheeded by the party-heartys. Having attended some of these "celebrations, myself, we feel Ms. Carter-Burns pain.

While many posters recounted their bad experience at the McKinley graduation and other public events, or at least commiserated, Braxton celebrated it with, among other things, an "interesting" use of the word "kahunnas."

Graduation is a time for celebration. I say stand up an yell, dance in the aisles if you so choose. People these days are to worried about what their neighbors might say about them to really enjoy the moment. Enjoy the moment, and to heck with what the stiff upper collars might say. Class envy hit the pages of the Rep yesterday.

We expect class envy from the have nots. But from the haves? Well, why not? This is Canton, and our outspoken haves increasingly are exhibiting envy towards the have nots and the government entitlements that permit them to live in Canton's northeastside lap of luxury unlike the haves, trapped in their Belden Village and Lake Cable ghettos.

But I Hate Canton also knows women who have collected government assistance ( and let's face it, that's who Frank and ds are mad at). Since assistance is time-limited and measly, we find it difficult to believe that very many women of reproductive age would play Michelle Duggar to avoid getting a job and/or an employed husband.

We'd be more impressed if Frank and ds demanded the government facilitated starvation of John H's bankers, politicians and Wall Streeters.

Moreover, Mr. Manello opposes abortion, especially government subsidized, which might actually alleviate some of his stress over deadbeats and their progeny. We do not remember ds making any remarks about abortion, but we are sure he has and that he is also opposed. Not sure where either of them stand on birth control, but probably they support the "keep your knees together" method.

To be fair then, we must announce a tie for June 17's Village Idiot award. dsteelman1 and John H: two sides of the same coin, equally bankrupt, take a shared first place. Frank Manello, a stand-up guy who has the guts to use his own name, gets an Honorable Mention.

We also thank Stephanie Watkins, who nominated Frank Manello. I Hate Canton needs more civic minded activists like Ms. Watkins!

Village Idiot of the Day, June 15, 2009: Anita Robinson-Muhammad, Shahkila Daniels

I Hate Canton got behind again yesterday. We initially thought we'd just skip Monday's award due to lateness. Then we discovered Anita Robinson-Muhammad's fight for the fundamental right of her daughter Shahkila Daniels to be McKinley High School's "featured twirler," a job she has held for the last three years.

Shahkila found herself out a job for the 2110 season when she turned down the position of "co-twirler," that is, to share the "job" with another girl. (At least that's what it sounds like. According to Robinson-Muhammad, though, words don't mean what they say.) Mother and daughter argue that Daniels misunderstood the job title, was pressured by the judges to make a quick decision, and wants to change her mind and keep her job as "featured twirler." Robinson-Muhammad told the Board of Education that Daniels' twirling skill is one of the reasons her daughter is being pursued by two colleges. Moreover, Shahkila was stressed from the audition and the pressure to maintain her feature position: "being a featured twirler at McK. has been a big part of her HS success and something she has prepared for most of her childhood. "

Since Ms Daniels is senior class president, a member of the National Honor Society, and has been cited by the Canton Professional Educators Association for her community involvement, it appears that she's preparing for a lot more than a career marching down a football field in a skimpy outfit.

Whatever, Ms Robinson-Muhammad and Ms Daniels are dead serious about this grave miscarriage of justice and have taken their their fight to the people. (As of this posting 61 comments have been posted and definite sides taken).

Posting under the handle arm721, both have presented their arguments in great detail (paragraph optional). Hence, we know more about the politics and arcana of baton twirling then we ever cared to know.

I would first like to enlighten all of you who are questioning my child's intellect. The term co-feature was used incorrectly by someone who does not know anything about baton twirling when in fact what they were talking about was actually 2 features. That is where the discrepancy comes in. Co means to twirl together doing the same routine in the same uniform. 2 means both doing their own thing. I hope that clears things up for those who think you know what you are talking about. And for reasons that are none of your business, the others involved are very aware of why this was upsetting to Shahkila.

Oh, did we mention that Ms. Robinson-Muhammad is the McKinley "twirler adviser" but has no "conflict of interest:"

There has only been 1 group of people who have had a problem with me being the advisor. And I don't have to state who they are.... I became the advisor because they were left with no advisor. Time that no advisor (except for mine) in the past has ever invested. I do it because I care and not for the easy money as some of them in the past has stated. During the time that I practiced with the majorettes my daughter got zero minutes of my time. ..

...The conflict of interest statement really cracks me up lol. Was it a conflict of interest when the Daniels boys were being coached by their father... Dont think so. Is it a conflict of interest for the the now asst. football coach to be coaching his son.... And by the way he came in and got a starting position as an underclassman removing students who had been at the school for the past three years. Is that a conflict of interest. None of these coaches was told what they could and could not do as coaches. Nor did they have their duties taken away from them because a parent complained. (coaches this is not a punt intended toward you, but probably the best example that relates so please don't take it persona I appreciate you guys) So why is my being the majorette advisor a CONFLICT OF INTEREST? The fact of the matter is this... the band director had every intention on having two feature twirlers (not co-features) and that is how it should of been presented in the first place....

3 Most importantly ... WHO CARES

I Hate Canton is the first to admit that baton twirlers irritate us. Not that good twirling doesn't take a lot talent, skill, and energy, but in the immoral words of dsteel1: who cares? (We feel the same way about hacky sack and frisbee).

From the first grade on, everybody is plagued by the twirler and her ubiquitous baton: school, Brownies, Sunday School, the grocery store, McDonald's. Constant reminders that her superior self and her instrument of torture are co-dependent and do not function one without the other. Twirlers usually tap dance, too--another story for another time. We knew a kindly Canton grandmother who was once subjected to a 5+hour baton recital that lasted almost to midnight just to see her 8-year old granddaughter perform in the last set. Who needs waterboarding when you have baton recitals?

When this newspaper drama began to unfold I Hate Canton assumed that this was a simple matter of stage mothering. It now appears that Shahkila has the lead in her mother's production. With that in mind I Hate Canton hereby awards Anita Robinson- Muhammad and unfortunately, Shahkila Daniels, the Monday, June 15, 2009 Village Idiot Award.

From what we have seen elsewhere of Ms. Daniels we like her, and we are not without sympathy. High school sucks. We wish Ms. Daniels the best. If this is the worse thing ever to happen to her, she'll lead a happy, productive life.

We also commiserate with Melissa Griffy Seeton for being stuck with reporting the school board meeting. Unfortunately, somebody's gotta do it. She should consider pitching the story to Lifetime.
