More from Don Cirelli

Don Cirelli sent the following comment after I Hate Canton posted his Letter the Repository Doesn't Want You to See. We thought it was so good that we didn't want it to get lost in our comments, so we are posting it here. His post further explicates "customer service" problems with the Repository regarding abuse by anonymous posters.

Thank you, for posting my letter to the Rep. I knew Gauger wouldn't print it, but I still wanted to make it clear to him my feelings about the shameful manner in which he is running that website.

After I sent this letter, I recieved a very curt response from Jeff Gauger, simply stating "I do not intend to print this letter".

I replied to Mr. Gauger "Of course you don't, Jeff. I didn't libel anyone and I didn't use a phony name. Perhaps if I had, it would wind up on the front page of the Rep. Nevertheless, I am going to the public with this since you are trying to cover your ass".

I had a little debate with someone recently about the use of fictitious pen names in cantonrep. The lady I was speaking to felt that pen names might be a good thing, as they shielded the legitimate whistleblower as well as regular commentators from abuse and retaliation.

I see it differently. The only things that thrive in the dark are worms, mushrooms and cockroaches. And that is exactly what we are now witnessing in the
"new" abuser-friendly cantonrep comment forum.

Originally, commentators were required to use their real names. The Rep also printed their email addresses alongside of their names when their commentary appeared in cantonrep. Of course, political conversation is always rough and tumble, and it tends to get heated and even rancorous at times. But under the original rules of cantonrep, people seemed to keep a check on the more obnoxious and abusive comments they might make, as they knew they were personally accountable for their comments.

There was at least one commentator at that time who decided he wanted to "kick it up a notch". At first he used his real name. He wound up getting booted from cantonrep because he had challenged a fellow reader to a physical altercation. But it wasn't long before this commentator re-appeared in that forum, only this time under a pen name. He was easily recognizable, however, by his very distinctive writing style and repeated use of certain phrases, such as "sick and twisted" - one of his favorite references to liberals.

This man felt free to address his fellow readers in the most egregious terms possible because he wasn't using his real name. The funny thing was, his obnoxious, hateful comments would stick to that board like glue. Anyone who challenged him, however, would have their own rebuttals booted in a New York minute. It seemed as if this particular abuser had some kind of personal connection with the cantonrep editors that gave him carte blanche to spew his bile at anyone he pleased. Anyone who defended themselves, however, were not privy to the same type of favored treatment. Once, this man's comments ever appeared in a different color and type style on the cantonrep board. That only confirmed, in my mind, that the editors had indeed granted this commentator a certain privilege that was not given to the other commentators. I think the Rep actually likes this kind of abusive behavior because it draws people in to see the freak show, hence it enhances their numbers (and revenue).

Despite numerous complaints by myself and others about this situation, the abusive commentator would stay on the board year after year, switching to a new pen name after his previous moniker was finally booted from the board.

So you can see why I don't buy these editorials that Mr. Gauger has written in the past about how he is supposedly perturbed and saddened by the loss of civility on cantonrep. I believe that is so much lip service and nothing else.

If Mr. Gauger wanted a return to civility, the worst thing he could have done is allow commentators to use pen names. That only added fuel to the fire and allowed the most uncivil people of all to feel entitled to abuse with impunity. And that is what we got. Cantonrep is now have to racists, bigots, and haters of all stripes. It is literally no holds barred now.

And it was only a matter of time before those who already felt entitled would go even further, to the point of outright libel. At least five actionable comments were made in the space of one week. I will not share the names that were mentioned in those comments, as I don't want to repeat the libel.

It is clear that the person or persons who uttered these slanderous statements feared no repercussions of any sort, legal or otherwise. The Repository has enabled their slander by making it possible for any malicious individual to register with their site anonymously and then to post their bilge anonymously. Mr. Gauger has abdicated any claim to journalistic ethics, at least as far as cantonrep is concerned. He may be the man in charge at the Rep, but he is obviously not in charge of his website. The anonymous commentator really calls the shots on that forum.

Rep Blocks Comments on Production Deal with City Hall

Speaking of comments...

I Hate Canton knows that stupid (or insane) comments are the bane of every editior. It's quite another story, though, when we see that comments, with no explanation, weren't even an option for Saturday's controversial Canton Quarterly Magazine Produced in Partnership with GateHouse Ohio.

According to Rep City Hall reporter Ed Balint, the paper has taken over advertising, design, production and distribution of the City Hall-generated Canton Connection magazine. Mayor William J. Healy II is the publisher and Adam Herman, the mayor’s communications director, is managing editor. The publication, under the name of Canton Quarterly, (see Spring 2008 edition here), started in 2006 under the reign of Republican Janet Weir Creighton.

According to the agreement:

The city is responsible for all of the written content and has final approval before the pages are printed, said Chris White, general manager and senior vice president of marketing and sales for The Repository. Photographs and artwork are to be provided by GateHouse Ohio...

and more:

Savings will be realized in changes in distribution and how the vendor is compensated for losses, according to a city memo from the selection committee. In addition to advertising revenue, the city agrees to subsidize the vendor up to $5,000 per issue ($20,000 maximum per year) to finance the production and delivery costs. In December, council unanimously approved the one-year agreement with GateHouse Ohio; the city can extend the contract for one year by notifying the vendor by Sept. 30. In March, council unanimously approved accepting donations of $2,500 each from the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, ArtsinStark and the Stark-Tuscarawas-Wayne Joint Solid Waste Management District to fund portions of The Canton Connection in 2009.

Funding for the publication also includes $2,500 from the Police Department’s law enforcement trust fund and $10,000 in federal Housing and Urban Development funding.

Repository publisher Kevin Kampman assures us that unlike Cyndi Lauper's admonition "money changes everything," this special arrangement won't change a thing at the Rep. (We could be snarky here, but we won't, since I Hate Canton is nothing if not ladies and gentlemen.)

This business relationship does not involve our newspaper newsrooms and will not shape the independent coverage decisions made by GateHouse Ohio journalists.

The Repository-City Hall contract is not new news. Back on March 17, Martin Olson in his Stark County Political Report, reported this deal, including how it was brokered, in great detail. and questioned the Rep's silence on it. Olson, a local lawyer who is highly critical of what he perceives as the paper's lack of political news coverage and inappropriate relationship with city and county officials wrote:

[SCPR] [R]eaders have been amazed at the low key, extremely conservative and, at times, non-existent coverage (both reportorially and editorially) of Stark County controversies and/or issues (including the Healy matters) by The Repository - Stark County's ONLY major countywide news outlet.

The feeling is that The Rep has way too many cozy relationships with the personalities, businesses, organizations and government institutions that its reporters and editors cover.

The revelation of The Rep/Canton Connection connection does nothing but add to the suspicion or at least a perception on the part of many Stark Countians that The Rep has a lot of "sweatheart" [sic] relationships within Stark and that readers get jaundiced reports and editorials as a consequence.

It is not I Hate Canton's intention to re-hash Olson's blog. Read it for yourself. He's in a much better position to follow these events than we are. We do find it curious, though, that it took the Rep nearly two months to "break" its own story and then pre-emptively block reaction. The Rep can subject others to abuse, but can't take it.

Which Way Did Dey Go! Which Way Did They Go? What Happened to the Rep's Crime & Court Comments?

Hey, what happened to Comments?

All Rep comments for Saturday's "Courts & Crime" have been disabled. Comments can still be made on most earlier posts in that section.

I Hate Canton understands to a degree. Some of the most odious posts show up under this subject. Crime, after all, is an excellent launch pad for our local racists, know nothings and blame-the- victimers to display their numerous social and cultural dysfunctions. Here, for example, is a response to last month's story, Man Charged for Threats, Stalking Estranged Wife, about a Marine major from California arrested in North Canton for menacing by stalking, telephone harassment and violation of a court order. He was later indicted by the Stark County Grand Jury on charges of attempted aggravated murder, violating a protection order, menacing by stalking and possessing criminal tools.

FYMP
Just4kicks, you are disrespectful!!! Apparently you have never served your country in any capacity. Those soldiers are all out there putting their lives on the line and the only thing that keeps them from going insane is the thought of coming home to their family. All to often when the soldier gets home the wife is gone with the kids. You say 'I don't feel sorry for him. He chose his lifestyle and all its pressures.' Guess what!!?? SO DID SHE!!!! SHE MARRIED A SOLDIER!!!!

We also noticed a couple days ago that comments on one of the MMRD articles were disappeared. It's no wonder, though, with comments like this from "the real BAC," whose mother apparently never taught him/her/it that's it's not nice to make fun of the mentally and physically disabled:

Observers Try to Figure Out Why Voters Overwhelmingly Approved MMRD
The real BAC
Scoreboard Retards 1
Taxpayers 0

Truth be told, if I Hate Canton were Rep editor Jeff Gauger, I'd be pretty disturbed that so many locals in my adopted city and environs were not only stupid (or insane) , but sought to immortalize their stupidly (or insanity) on the pages of my newspaper. I'd want to deep six the whole thing, too.

But the question still remains, why disable Courts & Crime and let the accusations of anonymous ax-grinding posters of criminal activities against long-time respected commenters stand?

I Hate Canton prefers a thousand stupid (or insane) comments over one Repository-facilitated malicious accusation.

Rumor Has It...

...that it might be interesting to listen to Ron Ponder's Points to Ponder on WHBC-AM Monday 10:00AM-12 noon. Don't know what or if something will transpire, but it could be fun. I Hate Canton will be listening.

The Letter the Canton Repository Doesn't Want You to See--A Letter to the Editor from Don Cirelli

Today it is our pleasure to print the letter the Rep refuses to publish--a letter from long-time Rep commenter Don Cirelli taking the paper to task for allowing its online edition to become dog box for anonymous posters practicing character assassination for the fun of it. A few hours after the letter was sent, Cirelli received an email from Rep editor Jeff Gauger informing him the Rep did not intend to publish it.

Cirelli's experience, as documented in his letter, illustrates the disregard the current Rep management holds toward its readership. Spirited discussions and even flame wars are tolerable and can even by fun. Accusing individuals of criminals acts and worse, from behind a veil of anonymity is not. The number of people who have stopped reading "comments" or even the Repository is unknown, but it's no mystery why the smears don't make it into the print edition.

Here is he letter the Rep doesn't want you to read:

As a daily reader of your paper and participant in your cantonrep online comments section, I am greatly perturbed by an abusive situation that has been allowed to go on ever since you permitted people to us pen names in your online forum. At least five times this past week, some person, or persons have committed outright libel in the comments section.

First, someone insinuated that a local politico stole money from a neighborhood association. I found out who made the comment and forwarded her identity to the individual she slandered. Then, someone implied that another local officeholder had stolen money from his employer. As if that wasn't enough slander for this individual to commit, he (or she) then implied (falsely) that I had been fired from my job because of criminal behavior.

That particular attack caused me to call Allen Schulman to discuss a possible lawsuit against this individual. Now, the latest tidbit from this rotten slanderer is the claim that a local judge indulged in illegal drugs in the 1970s, including LSD. I am sick to death of these phony names being used as a shield for malicious individuals to hide behind as they commit outright libel against people in this community. Mr. Gauger -please don't ever write another editorial discussing the "professional ethics" of your business. Not while you are allowing your news medium to used as a vehicle to destroy the reputations of local citizens.

I have spoken to you and your publisher about this by phone. You hung up on me, and your publisher was as casual and non-chalant about this situation as he could possibly be. Your attitude about this is shameful.

Don Cirelli

Octopuppet Reacts

Well, I Hate Canton seems to have yanked some tentacles. Octopuppet posted the following at about 1:30 this afternoon, taking Rep discourse to a silly new low (almost) --and appropriating OUR name to boot. Since I Hate Canton has been around for a a couple months, it's a little odd that suddenly with the guest blog below, he/she/it has suddenly discovered us.

Stark County Takes Great pride in Its Legal Heritage
Ihatecantonmember
Let me tell you all a thing or two. Only members of I Hate Canton.com are allowed to say rude and nasty remarks on this website. Got it. We rule the repository. Get it. Methinks anyone who does not hang out with us is a peice of crap. We will do as we please. And Frank Manello you have been given the stupid award by us. Who do you think you are disagreeing with us? We hate Canton hate Canton so much we don't even live there but we rule. You got it. I hate Canton.com is the real thing, baby. Don't forget it. If you dare cross any of us and that includes Mary, Jenny, Marcia, Denise, Cathy, or me (the big kahauna) you will be very sorry. I use to be a big time dispatcher for the City and I say who is right or wrong. Got it? You better because we rule this ship I will lie on you on my website. So watch out. You see what I did to the Mayor-mess with Uncle Don and you are next.

Rest assured, dear readers, that I Hate Canton is the real deal. We are the only authentic and legitimate I Hate Canton in town, and we will never post juvenile, insulting or personally harmful comments on the pages of the Rep. We leave that to the professionals.

NOTE: The above posted disappeared from the Rep about 2:00 PM today.

And by the way, Octopuppet, it's not all about you.

Guest Commentary: Is the Repository's Jeff Gauger Showing Favoritism Towards Octopuppet?

I Hate Canton is thrilled to feature our first guest blogger: Anonymous. (Hey, if anonymity is good enough for the Rep, it's good enough for IHC! As our audience grows we hope more readers will submit commentary.

As readers of the I Hate Canton blog are well aware, Octopuppet has been tireless lately in her quest to attack and destroy the good reputations of those people she dislikes. And as she appears to like no body except for her buddy the “handsome, young mayor” (Octopuppet’s words, not mine), she is kept rather busy.

Recently, her attacks have taken a disturbing turn. What used to be harmless and annoying little jabs at her enemies has now escalated into a full scale attack on people’s reputations. In the last week, alone, she has lobbed accusations of drug use, pedophilia, and election fraud.

One can almost forgive Repository Executive Editor Jeff Gauger for his inability to control the Octopuppet. She is, after all, quick on her keyboard and ruthless in the steps she will take to demean those she does not like. What can not be forgiven, however, is Gauger’s lack of compassion for the victims of Octopuppet.

Lack of compassion? Surely I am overreacting, you might be saying. What else would you call it when Gauger blatantly ignores multiple reader complaints about Octopuppet. He does not even afford his readers the courtesy of a response. This is customer service at its worst! This blogger even has it on good authority that Gauger hung up on a concerned reader who called him to complain about a recent libelous attack that Octopuppet had been allowed to post.

Additionally, this blogger finds it curious that while all but the very worst of Octopuppet’s insults seem to be allowed to remain actively posted for hours or even days, any time someone tries to defend themselves against an Octopuppet attack their comment gets removed nearly instantly. Does Gauger show favoritism towards the Octopuppet? It sure appears that way.

While we understand that banning an Octopuppet personality from commenting would only delay her attacks for as long as it takes her to set up a new username, it still baffles this blogger as to why Gauger will not ban a username that insists on repeatedly posting inaccurate and libelous statements. Such lack of action does not seem to be on par for an editor of a major newspaper.

So what is Gauger’s agenda?

Apathy? A strange thrill from all the controversy? A savvy business mind that sees Octopuppet’s antics as a way to drive website traffic?

This blogger believes it is a combination of all the above.

And while in the short term Gauger’s lack of action on the Octopuppet situation might not have any significant negative effects, in the long term it is our belief that such actions will lead to the downfall of the Rep’s reputation as a legitimate news source and Gauger’s reputation as a leader in the journalism industry.

Octopuppet Never Sleeps

NOTE: As about 10 AM, Octopuppet's comments were pulled. Maybe somebody at the Rep got a clue that' it's not cool to accuse people she doesn't like of drug dealing and being gay?

It's 9:00 AM. Do you know where your Octopuppet is?

She's at her keyboard!

Not content with accusing Don Cirelli of (apparently on-the-job) sexual misconduct and ties to NAMBLA (remarks removed) she's up bright and early this morning typing her little black heart out.

It's too early in the day yet to bestow any awards on Octopuppet. Posting under at least 40 names and counting, we're sure by the end of the day OP can come up with some better ones than these.

While we wait, though, here's a sample of her early morning thoughts to sip your tea by:

Yep--Ohio Dude--that's Mary Parker. Banging a bible in one hand and toting a gun in the other. She reminds me of old Sheriff Berans. Mary for your info I passed menopause years ago. No problems. No wonder you are so short and bald. Every time you splash that holy water on your head your hair melts off just a little more. The devils servant, Mary V. V for venom.

Mary and Don follow people around the comments just to insult them. Both have no life but Cantonrep.com. They must go to the same haridresser, I think it is Baldy's beauty shop.

Isn't it amazing that all these wefare people have computers, cell phones, swimming pools. The whole nine yeards. Hey man working is overrated. Selll dugs and live off the dole. That is the true key to success. Be a big fish in a very small bowl. lol

Gay Couples at Prom is Old News Thanks to '89 Lawsuit

Hey Don Cirelli--don't you wish this would have been allowed when you were in High School?

I Hate Canton offers our congrats to Scapegoat for a rousing retort to flowerchild's hizzy fit:

scapegoat:
flowerchild .....if you don't like the opions that people have about you why don't you do something to improve yourself.

Have you considered suing your brains for nonsupport? Perhaps Judge James could introduce you to one of his fine lawyers.

Village Idiot of the Day: May 6, 2009: Frank Manello, Tom Dewey

The Village Idiot is back!

I Hate Canton has been trying to get back on track and reading older comments. To pick up some slack we are belatedly bestowing our Daily Village Idiot Award on Frank Manello and Tom Dewey for their lively analysis of the interaction of the Democratic Party, NAMBLA, abortion and waterboarding. Normally we would award Mr. Dewey an honorable mention, but since "he" is Octopuppet and an alleged staunch Democrat from the Team Healy Cult, we believe a higher award is warranted.

Here are the winning comments (in order of appearance):

Letter: Which is Really Torture: Getting Enemy to Talk or Extinguishing Baby's Life?
Frank Manello
Let's see, according to some it is okay to kill a baby but not okay to inconvenience someone who wants to kill you. If anyone needed proof that the liberal 'brain' is in fact defective, the proof can be found in the comments above.

I also ask these staunch defenders of infanticide if they have in fact had or been party to an abortion, or do they just talk the talk? While we're at it, how many of you are members of NAMBLA? What do you people have against children?

Frank Manello
AC thanks to the tax system I am supporting many children who are not mine. I'm probably even paying for your food stamps.

As usual your 'logic' is non-existent, The Dems welcome NAMBLA and all other perverts. Since love of abortion is at the heart of the Dem party, NAMBLA must love abortion.

Talk about showing up unarmed to a battle of wits.

Tom Dewey
Frank Manello:

I bet you are right. Most of these clowns probably are members of NAMBLA. I'll guarantee half of these respondents are in their 40's, pasty white, and still sponging off mommy & daddy.

They cry whenever anyone disagrees with them. They support the 1st Amendment as long as it agrees with them. They are the first ones to complain when some cop takes their dope away because the law only applies to everyone else.

Their motto is: If it feels good, do it, don't let anyone get in the way of your good time!

I'm sure all of them would be for torturing if terrorists nuked their pot farms or their Toyota Prius'.

Frank Manello
Tom Dewey, Yes, and I'll bet none of them would have a problem with waterboarding President Bush. The liberal 'mind'; anything that feels good at the moment or advances their cause.

Frank Manello
Why are liberals so over the edge unhappy? I believe winning the election has made psycho's out of some of them. Or maybe just exposed them for the psycho's they already were. Perhaps it is that they just have to hate someone. Perhaps it is the weight of responsibilty in having to put their money where there mouths are now that they can't blame the Republicans? Perhaps they don't like what they see when they look in the mirror?

What more proof than the hysterical comments above is needed to confirm that liberalism is indeed a mental defect?

Oh yes, NAMBLA is a collection of perverts who are defended by the ACLU who is loved by the Democratic Party and funded by liberals.

Frank Manello
Don, you are who your friends are. Look at the groups who make up the Democrat Party.Do they make you proud?

TAC, I will agree that I loathe any and all child molestors. I certainly could never belong to any party or club that they belong to.

"MF:" Yes! "Babcock:" No! Curious Censorship at the Rep

The Rep's naughty word bot, which automatically censors any reference to former mayor Charlie Babcock or his family to Bab****, must have overslept this morning. How else explain that "MF" and "bitch" showed up to greet readers as they drank their morning coffee and perused online comments.

The comment, filed under a letter to the editor about the DiPietros, may go away soon, though we won't count on it, the way things go at the Rep. Here it is:

Ex..Vicki Davis ...see you soon bitch

As of this posting, this comment has been up for over two hours. I Hate Canton Knows for a fact that it's been flagged by several readers, including I Hate Canton.

Yet, curiously, 9 times out of 10, when a commenter defends him or herself from spurious, sometimes actionable, comments made by the ubiquitous Octopuppet, the defense is removed almost immediately, while the offending remark usually remains.

We have no idea who Wdkteam101 is. Personally, we don't believe it's Octopuppet. Our multi-personality posting disorderly has no dog--or should we say bitch--in Massillon. That we know of.

NOTE: We've been out of town for several days and are just now catching up. I Hate Canton should return to it's regular schedule shortly.

Addenda: "Bitch" Vicki Davis is Massillon's Animal Control Officer.

It's 10:38 AM and the comment is still up.

We checked at 11:18 AM and the comment was gone.

Addenda: Wkdteam101 posted another comment around the same time that sleepybot did catch. The **** can stand for only one word:
