I wanted to ask Mayor William J. Healy II and Fire Chief Stephen Rich how it is that there has been only one ambulance — and on Aug. 22, no ambulance — running in the city (“Canton Fire Department short on staff Saturday morning,” Aug. 23)?

There have been very limited and sometimes no EMS services provided to Canton’s citizens. Instead, the city is using the surrounding townships, like Plain and Canton townships, to provide the ambulance service.

We don't know about you, but we find this a little disquieting.

Let us all remember Ted Kennedy for what he really was and that my friends was a drunk and murderer. He also never worked a real job in his entire life and lived a very extravagant lifestyle off of the tax payers money, that would be you and I. Why is the press making him out to be this great saint and how wonderful he was for this country, you might want to ask the relatives of Mary Jo Kopechne. For those of you who don't know Mary Jo Kopechne, she is woman that Ted Kennedy left to die in the pond on Chappaquiddick Island on Martha's Vineyard.

We'd give a pass to JBern500, except for the crack that the job of US Senator is easy, if existent at all. We suggest s/he try it for awhile. There's an opening in Massachusetts right now. Since we doubt JBern500 will take the job, even if offered, we offer an Honorable Mention in its stead.

We also note that when John F. Kennedy was assassinated, people cheered that, too.

Heretofore, a bit player in New World Order paranoia, yesterday this stink weed bloomed full commenting on the Eakin murders under Mammone in Letter: Killing Children was the Most Merciful Thing

James Mammone, the self-confessed "revenge" killer of his two children, Macy, 5, and James, 3, and his mother-in-law Margaret Eakin, sent a 6-page letter to Rep reporter Shane Hoover outlining his reasons for the murders. Mammone, facing the death penalty, is currently being held on $15 million bond at the Stark County Jail awaiting trial. The Rep did not publish the letter, but summarized Mammone's narcissistic "justification" for wiping out his family:

The letter claims that Mammone never gave investigators a reason for the killings and that they didn’t ask.

Then it tries to explain why he killed his children.

No good comes to children whose parents divorce, and Mammone wasn’t going to allow their safety and innocence to be compromised, the letter states, although the writer doesn’t specifically say what endangered the children.

“I did not wish for harm to come to my children, but I concluded there was no other way to ensure they were going to receive to proper spiritual care they had been promised,” the letter states.

After the children’s deaths, Mammone became enraged and went to Eakin’s home, where he killed her, according to the letter.

“While I confess to being totally without just cause for needlessly murdering Margaret Eakin, I still feel as though I did the most merciful thing I could do for my children (based) upon the conditions of their environment, and the bleak outlook of the future they were to face,” the letter states. “If the public is outraged over the loss of my (children’s) life, then I beseech them to not let Macy and James die in vain!

“Stop getting divorces!

“Stop breaking up your (children’s) homes!

“Stop making vows to God that you aren’t (willing) to keep!”

About 3/4 of commenters to this article and a later piece, Jail Letter on Mammone Case Turned Over to Authorities, were outraged that the Rep gave Mammone a platform, claiming the paper had "glorified" Mammone to make money (one of the nicer accusations). We disagree with that evaluation, but we'll let that go for now.

Buried amongst the outrage were two comments from HeresJohnny.

We were all set to grant HeresJohnny his second Village Idiot of the Day award, but on second thought, how about Dirtbag of the Day? He is no better than James Mammone. And, he's walking the streets.

Racists, and Sexists, and Classists, oh my!

It's hard to believe that Reppies could hate more than they have proven they can, but they've given it the old Can-town try, and they can. This afternoon, Reppies hate bombed Wireless Program Makes Phones Available Free to Low Income Households for Emergency Calls, shutting down the discussion. The article read in part:

TracFone launched SafeLink Wireless in Ohio this month, a free service that will provide eligible, low-income households with a free cell phone, mobile access to emergency services and free 68 minutes of air time each month....SafeLink has become part of the FCC’s Lifeline and Link-Up programs, which began in 1984. Link-Up helps consumers with telephone installation costs, while Lifeline provides discounts on monthly phone service. The aim was to make sure low-income people could reach out for help during emergencies.

The TracFone program is part of the Low Income Program of the Universal Service Fund (USF) administered by the Universal Service Administrative Company. It is funded by contributions from the USF collected as part of the US charge billed to cell phone users. It is not supported by federal tax dollars.

We read this story as an afterthought, and knew immediately to expect a full-frontal attack from the vermin that haunt the dank spaces of the Rep. We were right. We saved 52 comments before the thread was shut down. We are tempted to include all of them here, but that would be too much for the delicate stomachs of our civilized readers. We are, therefore, limiting comments here to the most ignorant, stupid, and ugly, classified under Racist, Sexist, and Classist. Some overlap, so we have arbitrarily chosen the major classification for each. We are particularly struck by the snivel of middle class entitlees that believe the poor lead the Life of Riley on their hard-earned dime. Or is that simply the unvoiced fear our snooty writers may soon be the recipients of free non-governmental cell phone service for the poor?

While we we are on this rant....While at Giant Eagle a few weeks ago, a savy on the public dole dirtback was inline ahead of me. I, a hard working, would like a steak once in a while guy witnessed the following. The well spoken, (yeah right) under nurished (obese) drain on society was very happy to yank out her free food card in front of me. I was pleased to buy her a couple of steaks and a few racks of ribs via her free food card...AKA welfare card......But being the scam artist she was>>>>SHE MADE SURE SHE USED HER GIANT EAGLE CARD FOR THE FUEL PERKS!!! I / WE paid for the food and she gets discounted gas! I asked the cashier if it is legal and she said it happens all day long. If thats not a crock of *&^% and for the record yes she did drive away in a newer SUV that I cannot afford to own..

How can people on welfare and low income even afford cells phones? I may not be at poverty level, but I still cannot afford a computer line and cable and a cell phone, so I had to give up the cell phone so I could pay for my computer line and cable.

This sure teaches our poverty level citizens that it pays to not make over poverty level amounts.

Middle class pays for everything for everyone, when they cannot even afford to have it themselves.

Look at health care. Government get's the greatest health care there is and look who pays for it .

I have been in a welfare receipients home, their children have all kinds of video games, big picture tv,brand name clothes, (not from the Goodwill either), computer, all of their chidren have cell phones. These people are on Welfare and have more than I could ever imagine having. The furniture is all up to date, nothing out of style. The only thing they don't own is a home and they are probably smart not to.

I own a home, work my *** off, pay taxes and property taxes and still cannot afford things that these low income family's have. What is wrong with this picture is what I would like to know.

The mother doesn't work, they live in a house for free, (at least they have a roof over their head and don't have to pay for it). While I go to work everyday, have to pay taxes to keep a roof over my head and pay taxes to keep a roof over their heads while they are out buying computers, tv's, cell phones, nice clothes, and computer games. What is this teaching our society?

It just repeats iteself over and over again, they are not teaching their children anything but to live off of other people's tax money that is circulated to our government facilitiies.

They don't have to worry if they are going to have to have enough money to pay their property taxes to keep a roof over their head because they don't have too someone else is paying it for them. They probably don't have to worry about food either.

Where do they get the money for all these things is what I would like to know, but yet are at poverty level and getting government assistance.

No wonder everyone wants to live in America! Come on over, the middle class will pay for your children and you so you can have all the luxuries you want. Not need, want.

You're right,kayal276. I am for helping people, but not to the point that it causes entitlement mentality. I was behind a lady at the grocery store, her kids wanted some gum. She originally told them no, but they picked it up and gave it to her anyway. They chose the kind that were over $2 a pack, so that was $4 in GUM! She just took it from them, said ok, and paid for it with the foodstamp card. I bet if she would have had paid for that with actual cash money she would have thought about it a little more. For me, that would be almost a 1/2 hour of work. I would never pay $4 for gum.

I am sick to death of yet another freebie for low income. Where is the handouts for the middle class working their butts off.

My spouse works two jobs and I work myself . We pay our bills and help our children out a little with their education. There is not one freebie that I am aware of for the hard working middle class. The people I know that are low income already have cell phones and services on them that even I don't have due to the extra cost!!!! Maybe we could offer these recipients of the tracphones jobs instead.

More than 46,870 people in Stark Co.are eligible ??? No mention of what this program cost is but I guess no expense is too great for helping these poor low-income households. Free medical, housing, food stamps and now cell phones..........sometimes I wonder why I'm so stupid to keep working so hard to make ends meet when I could just give up trying and hopefully get on some of these programs.

General Assistance/Disability Assistance (can't have enough assistance can we, now I can park in the handicap spot at Wall Mart)
Home Energy Assistance (free gas, electric, and water)
Supplemental Security Disability Income (see two line above)
Ohio Works First or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (Maybe I should check this one out, sounds like a great way to get started at top of list)

Now 68 min for everyone in the household per month for emergencies, I wonder if the new baby gets one.

Come on people we can do better that this. How about a $200.00 gift certificate at Wall Mart per week, or free car insurance in case those 22's get stolen. Why don't we start a 401K program for them? I know, what about a round trip vacation to Disney World twice a year. You know those dumb tax payers won't even know the money is gone.

Why would anyone want a minimum wage job if they were getting all of the above? If you raised minimum wage to $20.00 per hour they would break even.

This is not about people who fall on hard times and use the program to get back on their feet. This is about the people who have MASTERED the program and are now in their 4th generation of living off the government.

I know a guy who recently told me to my face about his girl friend being on welfare. He makes over $90,000 a year acording to him. He told me he hasn't bought groceries for the last two years. She moved in with her two kids and life is good. He bragged about all the steaks they eat, and how much money she gets.

And yes you can get alcohol, cigerettes, and lottery tickets with your food stamps, you just haven't figured out the system yet. Would you like to trade $50.00 worth of food stamps for $20.00 cash?

i really dont know what to say about this article...my husband is a college graduate, had a wonderful job in com;puters,, we had a home, and i was a stay at home mom..my husband lost his job, we lost our house, and car..we were saved by help...i always looked down on people who got assistance....but now i am one of them..alot of people look down on us but you know what?? this system was supposed to be for people like my family and myself..not for people to abuse it and not do anything for themselves..but one thing needs to be address: if you want to spout negative things about getting these services you better be a little more educated about them...you CANNNNOT get alcohol and ciggies on food stamps...i, for one, will not be doing this program..there are alot more people out there worse off than myself who need these phones.. so in short, dont look down on us who actually try to do something with their lives and are on assistance..we really are trying to move forward..

All that separates the majority of people on Public Assistance from those who are not is a twist of fate; a budget cut by an employer; economic strife; a sudden illness; an accident; bad luck or any number of other things that would be no ones fault.

Don't think you're all that superior just because your portion of the parapet you sit upon hasn't fallen down yet.....It could happen to anyone at anytime and land you face down writhing for help. Be glad it is there, if you ever call.

I agree with theame 19 why do u all have so much time on your hands to hate people who need help.. i just like you get up and go to work everyday TWO jobs and pay taxes at both of those jobs so i dont feel like you are paying for anything for me. i pay the same taxes u pay... i pay a mortgage just like you with no section 8 however i do get food stamps and medical and free lunch( by the way ajcohio i am not and have never been on crack) i put my clothes on and go to work just like you.. this really shows how ignorant people can be. the fact that u have a problem with people getting assistance is just crazy and that would be why our community is so divided now.. for those of you who are doing all this complaining hope that you never have to apply for government assistance if something goes wrong in your life because you will then see that even though you work hard you may still need help at one time or another.. i am not ashamed of the fact that i recieve food stamps or medical or qualify for this phone in fact i look at this all as a little savings plan... THE TAXES I PAY COMING BACK TO ME... this really says a lot about or community!!!

Just when I Hate Canton thinks we've seen the last of Bummy he's pops back: a bit player in our life, like Guinn "Big Boy" Williams or J. C. Flippen. Last time we heard from him (we're using the generic "him" since we suspect "he" really is a "he") Bummy was lecturing us on the impossibility of the moon landing. To be specific, Bummy informed us that the 1969 Apollo moon landing never happened because God only lets a few people go to the moon (for example, Enoch), and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin aren't two of them.

We were gifted yesterday with Bummy's reappearance in Michael Jackson to be Buried on His Birthday.

Woe be to anyone from Canton who escapes the boundaries of our little Hateopolis and goes on to lead a successful life in the real world. We saw this weekend what poor regard our Reppies hold for the O'Jays, the tremendously successful R&B group that has kept its hometown roots alive and well, much to the dismay of local cranks. The O'Jays aren't alone.

Today we have singer Macy Gray. Ms Gray, unfortunate enough to be born here, but smart enough to get out before permanent social warp set in, is the recipient of numerous music awards: American Music Awards, Billboard Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, Soultrain Awards, and 5 Grammies. She will be a contestant in this season's Dancing with the Stars scheduled to start on September 21. Other contestants include Michael Irvin, Donny Osmond, Kelly Osbourne, and the improbable Tom Delay. You'd think in the spirit of hometown niceness, our Reppies could at least wish her luck. But remember. This is Canton and they are Reppies.

As usual, its difficult to judge who is the bigger idiot. We'll cut the Macy Gray naysayers loose, using them as an example of native negativity. (Have you noticed more and more people are complaining about the general negativity of posters?) today and cut to the chase.

Who better than "ohiodude," IRL old Rep regime poster, David Crowe, to exemplify Canton's attitude toward successful and famous natives. Would he have been equally generous in his praise for world renowned mezzo soprano Blanche Thebom, a 1935 graduate of McKinley High School? Probably.

Village Idiot of the Day, August 16, 2009: "BlackHoodedSaxon," "gmorris," "colorless"

Have you ever seen a more miserable group of people than our Reppies? They see nothing-- absolutely nothing-- good in anything that's related to Canton. Reading the Rep is like falling down the rabbit hole. Football Hall of Fame Weekend, the ribs burn-off, First Friday, the Arts District, cultural exhibitions, concerts. All of these, and more, are considered loathsome events or event locations full of social vermin: thugs, teens in baggy pants, hippies, skateboard punks, snobs, fags, the rich, illegals, liberals, pedophiles, people of color, unmarried mothers, SARTA riders, tax dodgers, and welfare cheats.

The latest event to run afoul of Reppies is the annual O'Jay's Family Reunion, held this year at Nimisilla Park and Fawcett Stadium. The event, in its fifth year, featured a youth basketball tournament, rides, games, food vendors, entertainment, a parade, a dance troupe, ballroom dance presentations, and an amateur night at the Apollo. The big draw was the big entertainment: the Whispers, Maze with Frankie Beverly and, of course, the O'Jays. This year about 15,000 people reportedly showed up bringing a boatload of money into our economically depressed area.

You'd think our Reppies would be proud that Canton is the hometown of the O'Jays, one of the most successful R&B/Soul groups of the 1970s. They were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame class of 2005 with U2, the Pretenders, Percy Sledge, and Buddy Guy. You'd think it would be an honor for Canton to be the host town for the O'Jays Family Reunion. It's kind of like having the Temps or The Miracles in your own backyard.

Unless you're from Canton.

The Rep's upbeat coverage and positive reports from normal people of the 2-day event were met with howls of disapproval from our resident crabs. Under People Travel Near and Far to Attend O'Jay's Family Reunion we find a collection of complaints running from inconvenience to racist. It appears that some of the most egregious comments were removed by the Rep, so we are working with what's left.

I can not believe how loud this concert is. I do not live even close to the stadium (around 30th and Cleveland Avenue) and the noise is incredibly loud. I have a sick child at home and neither of us can sleep due to the loud music. It is nearly midnight and the music sounds like it is right in our backyard. I really cannot believe that the City would be so inconsiderate to allow the loud volume to affect innocent residents! I can understand that they want to hold a concert and the money it brings to the city, but they should at least think about the residents who have to put up with the noise. I mean how far does one have to move to escape the noise? There has to be another place to hold a concert that would not violate noise ordinances and disrupt residents. You would think that the City would be fair and think about others and not just the money! Just another reason to move out of Canton!

Feel for the working people who need their sleep when late at night the concert is going strong. The noise from a football game is in no way as loud as a concert. The HOF concerts were over at 8PM. Man they were loud especially zoso........... Too many folks being crowded into any facility is dangerous. None of the local bar bands who play outside are as loud as a stadium concert or play late at night. Its a completely different situation. I wish there were more concerts in town just better organized. Remember 30sih years ago many people were trampled at a Who concerts in Cincinnati. I thought general admission tickets were outlawed because of that event. Why were there general admission events for this concert??? Crowds pushing locked gates....... very dangerous.

i had freinds working a drink stand and the people that came to the concert were all a bunch of rude disrepectful degenerates!!! some even threw dinks on the workers just to make the an already bad situation worse!!! i hope Obo the great never comes here the city would probly burn like south certral LA,

by the way my brother had a live band on his out door deck at his bar play till 10 pm in canton township like the stadium and was ticked by the stark county sherifs so 12:30 may have been past the legal time for noise???? so i can say they had the right to complain......

We're going to cut the first three whingers some slack today. Maybe music really does keep them awake. When we can't sleep we stick in the earplugs and listen to old Iggy Pop or Anthrax and fall right into dreamland, but that probably doesn't work for everybody. A Saturday night concert running until 12:30 AM, though, hardy seems out of line. We've been to weekday night discos on the beach that don't even start until midnight and run until 5:00, ending just in time to go home, change clothes, and go to work.

I Hate Canton really wonders, though, about gmorris' and BlackHoodedSaxon's (dare we ask what that means?) inordinate concern for the sleep deprivation of "working class people," of which we guess they are not. We have, in fact, never heard such a complaint issued in class terms before. We cornered a friend of ours who happened to be close by to get his opinion. He cuts and lays tile for a living. His response was "WTF does that mean? Who cares? Stupid people." Granted a 1-person poll is hardly meaningful, but there are now two of us who find this "concern" suspiciously odd.

What "gmorris" and "Saxon" really meant was, "I'm supporting your lazy ass with my hard-earned, government-stolen tax money while you ( black) deadbeats, degenerates, and baby makers are out partying. Show some respect for you hard-working betters home in bed by 9. Like us.

And for "colorless," what do we say? If so many concert goers were riotous and assaulting vendors, why weren't the police called? As a veteran concert goer ourself, we can recall times when police billy-clubbed our riotous brethren and sistern for much less than dumping drinks on somebody. On a deeper level, "colorless" is hinting that O'Jays fans are a threat to society and would burn the town to the ground if Barack Obama came to visit. This make no sense, unless 'colorless" is suggesting that th O'Jays Reunion was packed with "rude disrespectful degenerate" Reppies. They're the only people we can think of who would loot and burn the town at the sight of the president.

Due to the incendiary comments of "colorless" we feel it our duty to award him or her our Village Idiot of the Day for August 16, 2009. He or she shares the award with BlackHoodedSaxon who would have placed second had it not been for "Have some respect for the working class who support you."

See, two of Stark County's finest police dispatchers were popped recently for sending an ugly little picture around to their colleagues. Ohio Daily Blog.com broke the story on Friday. Later that day, the Rep picked it up.

The Rep's Edd Prichard writes:

The e-mail in question is a photograph of Air Force One and claims the plane’s identification number has changed since Barack Obama became president. The photo has been doctored to show a new number of the plane’s tail. The combination of numbers and letters spells out a racial slur.

We suggest you go to Ohio Daily Blog for details, including this link to the picture and emails. The picture the dispatchers found so hilarious is also posted on the right. We suppose somebody will kick us for posting it, but we think it's important for Stark Countians to know what those who protect and serve do when they're protecting and serving us. As of this writing, three Ohio Daily Blog stories on the incident are at the top of the blog's page, just below a poll and a entry on healthcare.

According to the Ohio Daily articles, North Canton Dispatcher Anita Malachowski and Uniontown Dispatcher Holli Webb are both currently on administrative leave while the incident is investigated:

Dispatcher Anita Malachowski forwarded a message she received to an undisclosed number of recipients. Clearly a violation of the public trust and jeopardizing the police officers in her department.

What's more shocking is that the story doesn't stop there.

Malachowski received the email as part of a larger email blast sent by Uniontown Police Dispatcher Holli Webb.

Our white Republican Reppies, of course, have their own take on this: what's the big deal?

If you were in the midst of a home invasion or a trapped in a car crash would you want them on the other end of the phone? Especially if you were black.
